TATTOO AFTERCARE

If your artist has used second skin, you can keep this on for up to 48 hours. If moisture or dirt gets underneath the second skin take it off in the shower. Don't pull the second skin off dry! Once the second skin has been removed follow cleaning instructions in step two.

After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or let it airdry. Apply a thin layer of tattoo aftercare (Bepanthan tattoo, Palmer's original, Easytattoo). Do this 2 to 3 times a day. Never put aftercare on a wet tattoo. Too much aftercare can slow the healing process. Never use Vaseline!
For the first night you can rewrap your tattoo with clingfilm if you are worried about staining your sheets.

Do not soak the tattoo in water until the tattoo is fully healed. Quick showers are fine but no baths, swimming or hot tubs. Do not expose the tattoo to the sun for at least 3 weeks and make sure to apply sunscreen once healed to prevent fading.

If your artist has used clingfilm, keep the tattoo covered until you get home. When removing the clingfilm the tattoo can look messy, this is normal! With clean hands use warm water and gentle soap to wash the tattoo. You may need to repeat this a few times until the tattoo no longer feels 'slimy'
(this will make sense when you're doing it).

Over the next few days a light scabbing will form. If moisturised properly these should not be big thick scabs. During the healing it is normal for the tattoo to become itchy. Do not scratch or pick at it! This can lead to scarring, infection and affect the quality and colour of your tattoo. Let the scabs heal naturally and tap/slap the area if it gets too itchy.

Do not get the tattoo dirty while it's healing. Take special care when working in dirty/dusty environments. If your job means this is a possibility please speak to your artist so they can best advise you.
In case of infection, allergic reaction or other emergencies, consult your GP immediately.
Healing usually takes around 7-14 days though this varies from person to person. Keep applying aftercare until all the dry/flaky skin has come off and whenever the tattoo feels dry.
